IC INFORMATION

Character Name: Urianger Augurelt
Canon: Final Fantasy XIV
Canon Point: Immediately post-Endwalker
Age: Mid 30s
Background: Here!

Arrival Scenario: Thorne

Suitability:

This is Urianger's second time waking up in a world completely unknown to him, and while I'm reluctant to suggest he's somehow "used to it" he's certainly in a better position than most. He will be able to keep a sense of level-headed calm about him as he gathers his bearings and tries to figure out his next steps β€” which will most likely result in him taking himself off to a tower (or a small personal residence, if possible!) and immersing himself in research.

This will be done under the guise of neutral-to-positive feelings towards Thorne itself β€” especially if there's knowledge to be gained by playing the ally β€” although in truth his greatest loyalty is to the Warrior of Light. While it's true that Urianger would never abandon a people in need of his help, he knows cities, their leaders, and their hidden agendas all too well, which means he'll want to be certain of their intentions before inviting Himeka to their cause. He's also well aware that this is something of a long-game plan, however after his three years spent on the First he knows he may very well have the time on his hands!

More immediately: the fact that Castle Thorne has a library means he'll have little reason to stray far in these early days. He has a tendency to settle in places he can turn into research hubs: the Bookmans Shelves in Il Mheg, for example, was the abandoned home of an academic, which he subsequently turned into his base of academic operations. He'll also likely see the main city itself as the best place for him to keep an ear to the ground for rumours and information, which he has a tendency to gather in utmost secrecy should he ever need to work in the shadow of his friends.

Powers:

ASTROMANCY β˜† The Astrologian attunes their aetherial energy to the celestial bodies of a realm and, with the help of astral divination, uses the magicks to bend and weave fate. It is a form of soothsaying that has immediately practical results: Urianger uses a planisphere paired with Eorzea's Major and Minor arcana to read the fortunes of his allies, and can use those readings to alter the progress of a fight. In technical terms: it's a very sparkly healing class that also uses buffs to boost allies damage output, with a couple of astral-themed damage-dealing spells alongside it should he find himself cornered. In terms of his Ascend spell this shouldn't be too big a problem in terms of Abraxas: FFXIV lore states that characters who are already dead / whose aether has reuturned to the Aetherial Sea cannot be returned through healing magic, so he won't be able to turn the tide of any battles by becoming some kind of well-intentioned necromancer!

LITHOMANCY β˜† While those who train as Arcanists (Urianger's starting class in A Realm Reborn) usually branch into Summoner or Scholar, Lithomancer us a unique title given to Urianger's mastery of Summoning. As a result of his research he now has the power to summon what essentially amounts to the essence of Eorzea's fire, wind, and earth aspected Primals, which allows him to launch powerful elemental attacks on his enemies. It also gives him access to a basic heal, shield, and raise spell, however for the purposes of Abraxas I'd be happy to strike those off the list and keep all healing spells to his astromancy powers!

AETHERIAL MANIPULATION β˜† A spell that is part of the Black Mage's toolkit, with Urianger representing a notable exception. This allows him to manipulate his aether for the purpose of teleportation, presumably by tethering his own aether to that of an ally and using it to pull himself to their side. This spell will only work on allies within a range of 25 yalms and is restricted soley to the user.

PERSONALITY QUESTIONS

Describe an important event in your character's life and how it impacted them.

Urianger's most important recent moment is the long-overdue conversation he had with the parents of the woman he evidently loved β€” and who sacrificed her life for the Scions cause during the events of A Realm Reborn. There's a fair bit of backstory to this conversation: Moenbryda and Urianger had known one another since childhood, and she was the driving force in making sure that the children who bullied him were never able to cause him to fully close himself off from the world. She validated his interests (reading, studying) and gave him time plenty of time to indulge them, but would also drag him out to experience the world in person instead of through texts, and they were evidently inseperable during their time as Sharlayan Archons. Urianger evidently felt strongly for her, and loved her parents as his own, and when she gave her life for their cause his whole world shattered into pieces.

He puts on a brave fave throughout β€” his calm insistance is that he simply needs some time alone to grieve her loss β€” but the guilt he feels for his part in her death causes him to shut himself off from Sharlayan almost completely. There are many attempts to write to her parents, to share in their grief and express the depths of his sorrow for her loss, but he never manages to muster the courage to reach out and contact them. How do you face the parents of the woman to whom you never managed to confess your love, and whose desire to help you ended up leading to her death?

During the events of Endwalker the Scions have to head back to Sharlayan to begin the next phase of their plan, and Urianger expresses significant apprehension at the possibility of being faced with Moenbryda's parents. When it inevitably happens, however, they embrace him as a son: Urianger is stunned to find that they've been concerned about him, and they chide him for not coming to him right away so that they can comfort the man their daughter cared for so much. They explain to him that their daughter ever made her own choices, that she cared for Urianger more than perhaps even he knew, and that her death was in no way his fault as he'd let himself believe.

Not only is it a moment of clarity for Urianger, but it's a moment of truly belonging. For a man who's ever felt largely ridiculed by society he suddenly has familial warmth again β€” alongside the lifting of that crushing fear that Moenbryda's parents would hate him for her death. Instead, they explain that all Moenbryda ever wanted was to see Urianger embrace the world, its people, and the experiences it could offer him, which finally helps Urianger take his first steps forwards with her love in his heart and his spirit freed from the guilt that was holding him back.

Does your character have a moral code, or other set of standards they try to live by?

While Urianger has an academic's background and projects the air of one who values an evidence-based approach, it's also important to remember that he is a fervent believer in the power of belief. As a scholar of divination and prophecy who eventually becomes an astrologian there's always been an air of fate about him: he works extremely hard to uncover the facts surrounding the arts, but it's difficult to escape the fact that said arts are so strongly linked with ideas of preordination.

This means that he believes the things he does have to be done for a reason, and that said reason is part of something far larger than himself. In picking up astromancy Urianger was able to bring himself closer to a more hands-on relationship with the concept: he uses celestial aether and his deck of cards to weave, alter, or reject the imminent futures of those around him, all of which speaks to his fervent belief in fate. He also tells Ryne in a time of crisis that all she need to do overcome her doubts is to believe, and that her own determination paired with the hand of fate will guide her along her path.

It's this code that guides Urianger in everything that he does. It's why he's able to make the decisions he has done β€” wretched though they may sometimes seem, and hurtful though they sometimes are β€” and sets the standard by which he lives: his belief in his friends, in Eorzea, and ultimately in fate, gives him the assurance he needs to continue fighting.

What quality or qualities do they admire most?

Loyalty is a quality that has great meaning to Urianger β€” most likely because he's had to throw his own into question time and time again in his efforts to protect his friends. He is an extremely devoted ally and who values the same in his companions: his trust in them is as whole-hearted as it is deep, and the fact that he's never had to query where their loyalties lie is something that fills him with great shame for his own behaviour.

He also values those who would put aside their own needs for those of others. This is something he likely learned from his time spent under Louisoix Levellieur, who was determined to break through the veil of secrecy surrounding Old Sharlyan and share their knowledge with the rest of the world. The members of his Circle of Knowing all swore to reject neutrality and spread wisdom and help wherever they could, which are ideals to which Urianger holds fast even today. That the Warrior of Light embodies it so thoroughly makes them something of an inspiration to Urianger β€” as are rest of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn β€” and he is naturally drawn to those would would wish to use their positions and knowledge to aid those in need.

This is arguably why he agreed to the Crystal Exarch's plan on the first. Urianger recognised in him those same qualities that he admired within his fellow Scions; that same loyalty, trust, and determination to give everything to protect the world from which he came.

Do they have a part of themselves they dislike?

Absolutely.

Urianger is ever at odds with his skill in weaving webs of deception. When he truly believes his schemes to be for the good of the Scions (and as such, Eorzea) he will do everything in his power to keep the people he loves in the dark, ostensibly for fear of drawing them into something too dangerous for them to be able to properly handle. While he would never doubt their strength he's acutely aware that most of them are driven by a bottomless sense of honour β€” and oftentimes Urianger is the one who, under the cover of dark, will take on the burden of making dishonourable decisions on their behalf. Far better for only one of them have to live with such shame than to taint the whole group.

It is worth stressing that the reason he dislikes this part of himself isn't that it puts him in less honourable standing as a member of the group, but that it hurts him deeply to have to keep secrets from his friends. In many ways his life would be easier if he were a terrible liar, but he knows that his talent for deception is both uncommon and something that could truly help them. The Crystal Exarch recognised that, too, and draws him into his scheme to save the First (and with it, the Source), for all Urianger expresses great pain at having to be part of yet another plan to which his companions are not privy.

While this is addressed in Endwalker, and he claims that he'll no longer keep any secrets from the Warrior of Light, we're yet to see any concrete evidence that he's sticking to his promise. In Abraxas he'll be aware that Himeka is from a point in time somewhat earlier than him; by his reckoning it might be necessary to maintain certain deceptions until they level out in temporial terms. Furthermore, Thorne is a wholly new city on a wholly new world to which he's yet to figure out the rules. If deception will keep his friends safe while he learns all he can of this place, then it's highly likely he'll keep certain secrets to himself to shield them from any dangers that might come of it.

What is their sign, and why?

Urianger's sign is Death as it's the symbol that best represents his tendency to play the waiting game.

He is an extremely dedicated scholar: the pursuit of knowledge has ever been (and ever will be) a huge part of who he is, and he believes that learning and careful planning are the means by which the best successes are achieved. His years of study have rarely offered immediate satisfaction; he never expects his efforts to bear fruit right away, but rather he weaves his knowledge into every encounter he faces so that in the future, he and his companions might be better prepared to face any dangers.

In terms of more specfic behavious, Urianger's propensity for deception, secret-keeping, and working in the shadows speaks of his acceptance of the fact that change worth making (and goals worth having) often take time. He was extrememly patient through the events of Heavensward: Urianger fostered a secret relationship with Elidibus and the Warriors of Darkness over the course of many months, all in the hopes that it would eventually pay off to the benefit of his friends. During his time on the First he worked tirelessly to save the Reflection knowing that if he ever made it home, he would never be able to return, but for him? It isn't about seeing the results of what he's done. It's about knowing that wherever he is, the people there still live on.

Lastly, it has to be noted that all of this was for the protection of Etheirys. Urianger ultimately gave his own life on Ultima Thule so that his star might have a future β€” one he'd evidently made peace with the fact that he might never see.
